Discover a people-first fundraising strategy with Floyd Jones' 5 S’s.

The 5 “S” Strategy for Fundraising with Heart

Courtney H

Burnout for nonprofit professionals is real.

The average tenure for a Development Director is just 12–18 months. Why? Because many fundraisers are stuck on the hamster wheel of constant campaigns — with little time to reflect, refocus, or recharge.

At WCFC 2025, Floyd Jones shared a framework we’ve been thinking about ever since:
The 5 S’s of Community-Led Fundraising.

It’s a simple but powerful approach that re-centers fundraising around people, purpose, and participation — not just metrics.

The 5 S’s of Success

1. Set an Intention

Before you do anything — before you decide what to raise, how to raise it, or even who you’re talking to — start with why.

Intention isn’t a goal. It’s your grounding force.

Above all, it’s what keeps your campaign human, your message honest, and your work aligned with the heart of your mission.

2. Set a Goal

Once you know the “why,” set a clear goal that serves it. Floyd shared his 5 Cs for goal-setting:

Clear. Compelling. Concise. Contextual. Community-aligned.

A goal that meets these criteria isn’t just a number — it’s a motivator. Something your whole community can rally around.

3. Share Your Story

Storytelling is the connective tissue between your intention and your impact.

Use a simple structure: Hook → Guide → Empower → Result

But don’t forget: the most powerful stories are shared, not just told. Let your donors and community be part of the narrative.

4. Segment Your Audience

Speak to supporters based on who they are and how they engage.

Generally, a one-time donor shouldn’t get the same message as a recurring sponsor. Tailor your outreach, and make the next step personal, not generic.

5. Supporter Mobilization

Make it joyful. Make it easy. Make it human.

Update your supporters along the way. Celebrate their involvement. Show them the progress they’re part of — not just the dollars they gave.

Reminder: 39% of people donate because someone they know asked them to. That’s not fundraising. That’s community activation.

Key Takeaways

  • A joyful campaign is a sustainable campaign.
  • When you lead with intention and clarity, you reduce burnout and increase belief.
  • Your people want to belong — invite them into your cause, not just your CRM.
